Going to Vietnam(previous) up (next) Good morning, Vietnam!

Breakfast in Bangkok, Supper in Saigon : 4 July 2004

We've made it to a whole new country. We're back in the land of Communism, and location of America's great defeat of the twentieth century, the beautiful country of Vietnam. Let the dominoes fall where they may, we love this place. Then again, we seem to say that a lot...

Ho Chi Minh City, as it's now officially called, is a beautiful place. It's less crowded and less overbuilt than Bangkok, and has a very different feel, both modern and retro at the same time. The people are incredibly nice, and it seems like they speak better English here even than in Thailand.

So far, we've hit some nice restaurants, walked around a good portion of the city, and checked out the War Remnants museum, where there's a relatively evenhanded view of the wars faught with the French and Americans. We've also found a nice hotel, some great clothes shopping and even a bit of nightlife.

We'll be hitting the Cu Chi tunnels tomorrow, then up the coast towards the end of the week, ending up in Hanoi, where we will venture out to some amazing coastal landscapes and the beautiful mountain region along the Chinese border. And there will be plenty of pictures!
