Five Nights in Bangkok : 2 April 2004![]() |
We have made it to our fourth country, and we love it! We safely arrived in Bangkok last night, and got an overpriced taxi ride to our hotel, the tallest hotel in all of Thailand. After checking in, we headed to the very top for the buffet dinner (which was pretty good, though kind of expensive for Thailand at about $10 per person), and the view, then crashed because we'd been up since 5 in the morning, Beijing time. Today was a simple day of exploration in the neighborhood where the hotel is, Pratunam for those of you that care. It's an interesting area of shopping, but a little lacking in the tourist sites. This suited us just fine, because we were actually shopping for an essential: guide books. We haven't purchased a book since New Zealand, where we got the Australia and China books, and it was a little difficult to find the English language Lonely Planet books in China. We found the books in the World Trade Center, which is actually a giant mall with an ice skating rink on the top floor (pretty funny, actually). The other advantage of this being mostly a shopping district (from what we can tell, anyway), is that there are fewer annoying young backpacker types here, something that has always worried us about Thailand. We're both happy to be here, especially after China. Depsite the hustle and bustle of the big city, the scary drivers and crowds, it just feels like a nicer place than China. Of course, we're planning on leaving the country within a week, to head out to Vietnam, Cambodia, Loas and maybe Myanmar. But we'll be back. And not just because our ticket to India is from Bangkok... |

They're religious items to release you from your heathen ways... Posted by Robin Scher @ 04/03/2004 11:49 AM PST |
hey chris...well, yes, Robin is right in regards to the purpose of the gifts. But, What are they actually? Well, the phallic one is a prayer wheel that we bought in Gyantse, Tibet (where we got locked in a Temple). The other gift is a prayer flag in which we purchased, by force, off a group of Tibetan mountain dwellers that we met on our way to lake Namtso, They REALLY liked Robin...It's all good!
